Montana, who has been a mainstay of underground country/rock since 2008, displays his songwriting and guitar skills in his newest LP Savage. Featuring hit like The Devil You know and Savage, Montana's newest LP propels him into the charts for the first time topping out at #5 for The Devil You Know on the Billboard US Mainstream Rock.
Unlike his previous work, Savage moves further away from Montana's country roots and sits firmly in the hard rock genre while keeping his signature blue-collar lyrics and contemporary, alternative song mixes. Fans of Montana's previous work may not love the new direction of Savage, but a majority of rock listeners will find Savage appealing, especially those who like 90's and 2000's hard rock.
While overall a solid album and a technically impressive display of songwriting and performance, some of the guitar riffs which the genre so heavily relies on make me feel like Montana could have done more to make his sound stand out. Savage does represent an impressive leap forward in Montana's vocal performance, with impressive displays of country drawls, rock screams, and gentle lilting, often all in the same song.
The Tempo gives Savage 3.5/5 stars. I'm excited to see what we get from Montana next. You should listen to Savage if you enjoy a blend of hard rock music with blue collar, country lyrics.
